U'd think he'd pick up some guitar skill by just being in the band.
But in general it's so he has something to do while Noel sings, and so he looks even more like John Lennon.

I think anyone in that sort of band would pick up basic skills on the instuments.
I'm sure Noel said in an interview that Liam wrote and played his songs for SOTSOG and HC to Noel on an acoustic.

'Songbird' was liams first go on the guitar and it comprised of three chords. He only started learning just before that.
