Yeah its for a level sensor that has a dash warning light.
It will leak whether its wired in or not 
Good luck putting it back on, thats a bitch of a job, and will leak 
The 8v baffle and gasket is meant to make it much easier.

it was a pain in the arse just having to bend the bloody pick up pipe to get in at the crank... grrr

Why not unbolt it? Its only 3 m6 bolts. I wouldn't fancy a bent pick up pipe on my car.
