delete the files from the HD, then write over the whole free space a number of times with random 0s/1s (within a file)....do that about 10 times, then delete the created file....sorted
and yesh there are programs that do this have a butchers on www.downloads.com...theres one called eraser, which is meant to be good

re-format, fill your hard drive up completely till its totally full - then reformat again... all gone.
since when you delete all it does is say it's now available to be written over, and unless something writes over it, it still remains and is recoverable.

aye
but data can still be recovered...although i think writing over the space about 70 times is what is suppose to be the secure amount...or something like that.

not a good idea to post on a public forum mate but thats foony as fook personally mate, i would buy another drive (just a smallish one for time being) copy everything you want across, wack new O/S on it then use that and hide the other until its all clear

Like every1 has said, even writing over it isnt enough, personally I'd just delete using erasing software. But if the police come knocking introduce your hard drive to a very powerfull magnet ;-)

In FHM mag a few month back, in the bit where they interview people with interestring jobs, they interviewed the computer cop who has worked on the Gary Glitter casr e.t.c and he said somethin like even if its deleted and wrote over it can still be retreived

theres a program that comes as part of norton utilities cant remember what its called but it erases all free space to US goverment specs. called "norton wipe" or something like that
the other way is instead of format c: find out who makes your hard disk and get the utility disk off there website then on the disk there should be a utility for "low level formating" this writes zeros to the drive in effect re-setting it. after this you will have to format it in windows or dos etc
