I used to have one, owned it from about 6000 miles, and was a great car until it got to around 50K then started to delvelop loads of electrical probs, mainly ECU faults, had 2 new ECU's fitted and 4 EGR valves in the space of 12 months, i got a bit fed up with it and sold it, it was a really nice car to drive though, and if not for the problems would probably still have it now.
Mine was only a 1.6 too though, and although not all that quick still went okay and was economical, if you get one, just make sure its got all the history.

I had a 2000 Astra Club 1.6 8v until I bought my Corsa about a month ago. The Astra was a good car - didn't go very fast, but I had the old crappy monopoint 75hp version of the 1.6 engine. 2002 onwards have the multipoint injection version at 85hp which go much better.
I only sold the Astra becuase it needed some work done to it (brake disks, exhaust, etc), and my insurance was about to run out - got the Corsa for the free insurance.
I had two accidents in my Astra too, and it was damned solid. Was hit by a 306 which fell to pieces, leaving the Astra slightly rippled down one side. Was also rearended by a Ford Cargo which didn't look too clever either.
