unlocking a phone is not illegal. once the phone is in your possesion then you can do as you please with it. the subsidy on the hadnset is made by from the networks from your line rental.
saying unlocking is breaking the contract and is illegal is about as daft as saying that you cant mod your car if you payed for it on finance cos youre changing the car that the finance funded

If I bought a GX20 from Argos Pay As You Go which are only for Vodafone networks, but I had an o2 Sim Card seperately, I could get it unlocked and it wouldnt be illegal.

phone unblocking is not illegal, however when a mobile phone is nicked and police ask the network (eg orange,vodafone etc) to block the phone completely, having that unlocked is illegal

You get the handset cheap as the network subsidises the cost due to the fact you will be spending the money with them over the next 12 months, if they didn't care about you putting in another networks sim then y would they lock it?

yup!
it's illegal to change the IMEI code (unique ID number of phone), but doing a SIM Unlock (all networks) isn't, all it will do is effectivly void any warranty you have under the contract.

unblocking and changine the IMEI number of the phone after it has been barred off the network is illegal

they only way you can break a mobile phone contract is by not paying the bill  because the line rental covers the cost of the free or cheap handset

How are they getting money if you stick another SIM in the phone? you won't be making calls on their number

it aint in the terms & conditions though! you are contracted to pay your line rental. nothing in the contract states that you must use the sim it is bought with
only problem that might occur is that orange can sometimes be quite picky if you have a faulty handset + you arent using the sim it was bought with. even if its another orange sim
