smoked him 3 times and every time i slowed for traffic he would catch up and sit in either 2nd or 3rd and try to pass me and even in 4th just put me foot down and he becomes a mere blue dot.
missus was laughing at him every time - he wasnt impressed

So you admit they're quick. Surely you won't dispute the fact Lotus are one of the world's finest when it comes to suspension engineering so the handling is about as spot on as you'll find in a road car?
What more do you want?
Also, the reason I mentioned that this board could sometimes be construed as ignorant is because its full of people such as member Y, for example, who post how they raced car X, beat them and thus car X is shite, together with anything else not owned by member Y.
Why can't people just accept that there are a lot of good cars out there, some of which aren't part of the latest, super cool, 'everyone buy a Jap turbo' phase?
The RX7 and the Elise are both good cars, each in their own way.

Theres nothing wrong with Lotus reliability, they're hardly TVR.
Plus, you seem to be missing the point of the Elise somewhat. They aren't designed to plod to work in or nip down the shops. They're sports cars. No unnecessary clutter just a raw and proper driving experience, a track car which comes with the added bonus of being very useable.
If you want perfect reliability amd something sensible, get a Corsa and leave the proper cars to those who appreciate them
