By the sounds of it you have never designed a site before, if it's going to be a corporate website it's probably not going to be a good idea to do this yourself but maybe better to get a professional to do it for you

Do a search on Google for web templates - there's so many available to give you inspiration and you can normally subscribe to the whole site for about £40.
For Javascript check out http://www.dynamicdrive.com
For general coding tips - http://www.w3schools.com

Make it compatible with ALL browsers......one thing I hate is sites that are "optimised for use with Internet Explorer and Netscape".
If a "shop" site doesn't work at all in Opera, that I normally use, I would refuse to buy anything from them on principle...

lol gimp well since its about 95% of people use IE, i think your in the loss mate Netscape and IE are the big runners, and then its all the other linux type broswers...if they work create, but little time is spent getting them to look perfect, unlike IE/netscape.
But yes, its a big job, especially if you coming from template world geocities etc etc You can design a site, but the shopping cart side is the hardest. Although i would personally sign up to a shopping cart website, where you pay a monthly/yearly fee and then just upload images and info about a product and the site takes care of the rest
best bet, google around for company sites similar to what you want to do and see what they have done and how, then base it loosly around a few of those

That figure is falling, and will continue to do so. Ignore standards at your peril!

Stopped using IE 6 about a month ago.
For some reason XP decided I didn't need my address bars in Windows Explorer or Internet Explorer, so typing in URL's is a bit of a problem!
So I'm now using Mozilla Firefox and it's a lot happier

If you want to setup a cart, look at templates like Oscommerce and Xcart. Oscommerce is the easier option, but Xcart is much more flexible to customise.

www.oscommerce.com
www.x-cart.com
I think oscommerce is free. Awesome Gti use it so you can check out there online shop to get a feel for it. As for X-Cart is costs $185.00 which is about £120.00, but your paying for the flexibility. But I warn you X-Cart can get complicated!

I created this Catalogue for a friend of my brothers, spent a long time on it, and he specifically stated he didnt want to Take orders on it, but rather have it to show his stock. Therefore it was more simple, run through all the items in the database, pull out the details, create the image thumbnail on the fly, spurge it out as an html table
However after all my hard work you can see he has put in 5 items, he has a simple admin page to type in product details and upload an image (Any Jpeg image, size doesnt matter etc)
Makes me

Yes, I have noticed that www.pvdalloys.co.uk does not conform to Opera-standards!
