Oh um Vehicle Registration Tax. The irish government imposes a Tax on any vehicle imported from outside the country. according to european law this is completely illiegal as it goes against the single market that they are trying to promote. but they get away with it cos there the goverenment
This Tax is also imposed on any new car bought.
E.G new car @ €21,000. 7k of this price would be VRT Also drive that car around the block and come back and try and sell it back to the garage 10 mins later and its worth 7k less btw
Ireland is one of the cheapest countries in europe to buy cars but by the time the goverment adds all its taxes it by far the dearest.
a 04 civic type R is about €37,000 thats around the £30,000 to u lot
i thought u'd know about it being from northern ireland.
BTW the astra is sweet

fcuk me that sounds nasty tax! Yer the whole point of the EU is no tariffs or import quotas amongst member nations. Meant to be free trade rather than protectionism. Hasn't this caused alot of public outroar?

Bet ur ass i have! i even tryed taking upon myself to go about finding out how they can get away with it. i have never been put through so much red tape. one department tells u to contact another department and then they just quote legislation. in the end i just gave up.
VRT is just one rip off the road tax cost is madness over here. a 2ltr corsa would cost about €750 or £500 ish to tax Insurance was about 4 times dearer over here than the uk up to about 2 years ago when it it started to come down.
Companies were starting to move there businesses to other countrys because insurance prices were crazy since the EURO came in. the goverment has now seen that its loosing millions so is putting pressure on the insurance regulator who have done nuthing up to now to bring premiums down premiums down.
Word of warning to u all over there.. if u do have a referndum on the euro vote no cos im tellin u's simple things will double and tripple in price
Sorry ive gone way off subject here
