i would think if it was the clutch realise bearing the noise would be there all the time cos the bearing is up against the clutch all the time not just when the car is in gear.
not being able to get it into certain gears points to the clutch eitther needs to be adjsuted or replaced.
however when ya put the 2 problems together it does point ot the aul gearbox being fooked.
are u not swapping that lump anyways?

Have you checked te gearbox oil level....
it will crunch gears, whine etc etc when its running low on oil....
Firstly id check the oil..... even replace it, and treat with a teflon based grease additive...
then check the cluth
then...... if needs be.... replace the gearbox with a shorter geared one

i just drained the oil in the gt gearbox.....
left it open and flushed it with normal oil..... then filled with the recommended gearbox oil and slick50...
worked a treat...
it WAS crunching into 2nd.... getting stuck in gear, having probs getting into reverse etc etc.... now its fine

The symptoms you described are similar to the ones i had straight after the engine swap, i got stranded with the car stuck out of gear, so i rammed it into gear and got home, my mechanic adjusted the clutch cable and it was ok, my engine revs to 7500+ and i find it hard to select gears at these rpm have i just fooked it slamming it into gear at high speeds.
Its weird cos the car pulls hard in all gears except 5th, i can pull very quick up to 110mph in 4th then put it into 5th and it almost slows down, after about 3-4miles it will be doing 120+ but i think it should do better lol

Tis ok, get a mechanic to look at ya gear linkage it might need adjusting, errr maybe mine does too all this slamming it in gear at high rpm might have made the linkage slip a bit!!!! only takes 2 minutes once ya get a car up on a ramp

u could get the box out without taking the engine out but ya'd prolly spend more time messing around trying to the the input shaft back into the clutch
the main proble is the gearbox is a heavy fecker and theres not alot of room to work. whoever put the battery tray into a corsa should be shot for designing it that way

Battery tray is in a shit position man, on later models they are bolted in not welded in like ours, looks like i found my excuse to put a different engine in

if we had the same insurance system that u's have over there i'd have a LET in my yoke by the end of the month. Pisses me off having to settle for a 1.6 conversion. i'll prolly chance me arm with a 2.0 but it a pain over here.

Funny thing is its renewal time for my insurance, i have rang round for quotes 90% of insurers wont insure me cos i got so many engine mods, and i got 4 years NCD and am 22 for fuck sake, if i dropped a LET in which im not doing honest!!!, then my insurance would only be a fraction more say £1100
