This is bugging me now... For some reason I'm unable to switch MSN Messenger off without switching off my PC Thus while my pc is on I constantly get noises of people coming online and off...
You see, Messenger loads automatically... Fair enough... I use it etc, then when I'm finished I close it and right click the icon in the task bar and click close... Closing the whole application fully...
... Or at least I thought.
It seems I have an older version of MSN Messenger as well as the newer 6.1 or whatever - possibly one that's built into Windows XP.
Yet this one doesn't show in my task bar. So I'm unable to close it like that, I still get messages saying 'bla bla has come online', and to everyone who has my msn addy I appear online even though I may be sleeping or away from the computer.
So I open MSN 6.1 again ... This opens and another message from the other MSN pops up saying 'you have been logged out of your account as you are accessing it from another copy of MSN'...
Wtf? How can I permantly sort this? delete + reinstall MSN messenger? But will I lose my contacts if I do?

its called windows messenger mate and its a piece of shite
however, you can uninstall it or just disable it by (going into control panel > administrative tools > Services > scroll down to "Messenger", double click and (if its running) press Stop, then in the drop down select Disable and OK it, restart system)

C/Program Files/Messanger, highlight folder, then delete . May have to close it in task manager first, but if that doest work have a look in control panel under add/remove programs, and go for it that way .

The messenger service isn't MSN Messenger I thought you would of known that
Way I got rid, installed SP1a, goto add-remove windows components, bottom of list, untick MSN Messenger...
BUT that doesn't fully un-install it!!
Boot into safemode, goto C:\Program Files\Messenger
delete everything in there & then reboot again
et-Voila! Shitey old MSN Messenger has gone! You may get Outlook Express complaining from time-to-time about it, but its nothin to worry about!
I tried the 'disable when windows starts' trick myself, but everytime I went into OE, it would load in the background, not show up in the systray & then boot me from Trillian & sign in as itself
Microsoft Passport is shite - its why MSN causes all this shit!!

go to www.dmsn.tk and download dmsn.
its much better:
dMSN can do the same things as your normal messenger:
Talk to friends
Change your nickname and status
Add a display picture (also know as avatar)
Send files through the msn server (for people with a firewall etc..) or direct
But dMSN has some extra functions that your normal messenger doesn’t have, for example:
Be online with several MSN adresses at the same time.
Login with your status on 'Invisible' or any other status you want.
Have a different MSN name in every conversation
Use and create your own plugins
Default plugin added: a FileServer for MSN using IRC like commands
See when someone starts a conversation with you (before he says something)
See when someone closes the chat conversation window.
See who added you into a conversation with multiple people
See when someone deletes you from their contactlist.
See the difference between MSN, dMSN users and webcam capable MSN users
See your fake and fakes friends (Explained in FAQ)
All avatars downloaded are stored on your computer in PNG format (96x96)
All personal emoticons downloaded are stored on your computer in PNG format (96x96)
Avatar scroller, automaticly change your avatar every 5 minutes
Send larger avatars then normal
Override someones avatar
Enter notes while in a conversation you might need later (date of birth, last name, phone numbers)
Away message, if you are online, busy or whatever you can always have an away message.
Auto log, always log your chats so you can read back everything that is said between you and your contacts.
Auto login multiple accounts on startup.
Auto away, change your status to away (or anything else) after x seconds of idle time (Windows only)
Auto update when a new version is available (dMSN asks if you wish to update when new version is available)
XML and text based chat logs
Customise all menu bars.
Customise your contact list:
Hide offline contacts
Show contacts by email, MSN name, alias or a combination of the above, supports multiple lines
Change the status icons
Show Avatars in the list
Show emoticons in the list
Sort contacts by group, status or both
Show contacts in the program (except contact list) by email, MSN name, alias or a combination of the above
Add new status icons (by downloading them from dmsnstuff.com...)
dMSN has 10 custom skins and 3 java skins
Send screen shots to your contacts
Add more then 12 users in one conversation (MSN messenger limit)
Specific triggers for each person (trigger = action after chat event)
Supported actions for a trigger include sound, a popup window and a windows balloon (balloon=Windows only)
Special codes in your name. (Explained in FAQ)
Nick scroller, change your name every 30 seconds into something complety different (allows the usage of the special codes)
You can use 'forbidden' words in your name.
You don't have to worry about Messenger worms and virusses, they wont work on dMSN(Windows only )
Text recall.
XML based setting files.
and it only loads up when you tell it to! its good.

yeah its all well & good that only loading when you tell it too, but it still doesn't solve the issue of the standard MSN Messenger in XP loading all the time
