Just started it and it sounded like it was running on a single cylinder... switched it off... back on again and same...

blipped the throttle a bit and it spluttered, finally got it idling about right. Took it for a drive, and it felt like I was driving around with my brakes on... Sitting at the lights my rev counter needle was bouncing up and down...

Whats up with my car?

I've had my suspicions that my Air flow meter is on the way out, but could it be something else?

Its an increasingly common condition facings cars whose owners secretly want an excuse to drop a valver in.

Air flow metering wouldn't cause it to run that rough.

I do want a 2.0 16v - but A) could probably not afford insurance and B) could not afford the conversion

This is what my mum keeps saying ... but this is poo... 90% of the time I just cruise around in 5th saving petrol at low revs... But that 10% of the time I want to blast I never take it near the red line... never hit the limiter and its (6250 on mine)... I do smooth gear changes at about 5600 rpm and generally drive it around 3k most of the time...

I'd hardly call that ragging it to death.

the only thing I could consider not being good is doing things like coming back from weston supermare at 2am at night and doing the whole 120 miles at 105-110 mph ish (about 5500 rpm in 5th)

sounds like what my old 1.6 sport went through m8..

was the eh eh eh ????? valve..cannae mind name but was fooling the car to think it was cold so it was forcing more fuel in...

Used to splutter..revs up and down.....flood etc..

will try and think of valve....

Sounds like the air flow meter...

Definately not the Idle Control Valve that someone said earlier as I've had one of those fail on me before and it's nothing like that...

I do feel its only the mapping thats gone to shit and nothing physically wrong with the engine components... but what sensor / device is it that's screwed?

mine were fcuked and could see loads of sparks flying round engine bay in the dark..

sounded like it was running on three cylinders

Sadly these crappy X12XE's are nearly all automated...

No HT leads, No Distrubtor, The timing is all varied on the fly depending on what the sensor's tell the ecu...

However, the sensors are usually fucked as its crappy vaux known for shit electrics.

I've been scared away from vaux ever since I went there and they said it'd be £76 just to have a diagnostic check

Never returned with problems...

dont worry about high speed driving i was cruising down the M1 at about 123mph for miles and miles, mine revs to 7500+ and mine runs sweet as, does sound like an ICV problem, or like said tep sensor,
Feck vauxhall they are shit, a diagnostic is £25 at vaux where i live, oh and new HT leads from vaux £120

yeh but yours is a 1.6 and mine is a 1.2, plus my gear box is a F13 and 5th doing 110 is revving high

I'm pretty sure its not ICV, as I've had that before and replaced it and this is nothing like that.

Could be temp sensor? Where is this found? and whats it do measure the temperature of the air? - Note my MFD temp displayed is totally wrong - but doubt they're connected?

I thought the air flow meter was partly joined in with the temp sensoring?

I definately don't have HT Leads, I just have a big rectangle thing with the coils coming out of it and no distributor.

Bastard - £25 for you, yet £76 for me to have diagnostics? If it was £25 I wouldn't mind taking my car in and getting it checked?

Even without engine management light on can they still check your car? Or will they look at me funny if I ask them to, when the light isnt on?

if ya cars R-reg or older then ya can read ya fault codes at home free of charge, didnt realise it was a 1.2, lol, the temp sensor measures the temperature of the coolant and adjusts the fuel going into the engine accordingly, if its messed up it will think the cars cold and put loads in or think its hot and not put enough in, its by the termostate at the front left of the engine., the big rectangle thing is a DIS, (distrubutorless ignition system) the leads coming off it are the leads i meant, also check ya plugs to make sure. remove the air flow meter and clean it with carb cleaning or similar

yeh I checked the plugs a while ago (see above) and found the right cylinder's plug wasn't fully tightened... hence orange/brown shit... but sorted it and put it all back on again...

It's T reg so paper clip doesn't work.

I've already sprayed it with carb cleaner, no real effect.

Paul is your exhaust sounding ok? O2 sensor and the AFM affect this kinda stuff, but it can also be the temp sensor, the crank sensor ect.


The EGR can also make the engine pack in.

Do you have the engine management light lit on ur dash?
