What would you rather have, out of interest? (Please note I have my own mind and am not asking CS to choose for me ) These are my main two choices for a year or so
M3 about £20k-£23k - 343bhp
Evo about £19k-22k - 300/320bhp
Similar running costs/insurance (if anything the M3 is cheaper) but the Evo has tuning potential whereas the M3 would be left alone
Provided I can, the M3 is my top choice by a long way but never discount Jap cars

Out of those 2 i would have the M3
A - Because the new Evos are horrible and arnt meant enough , bring back styling of the 4/5/6
B - its much sexier to look at
C - its close to a CSL

Evo cos at the end of the day your saving yourself a bit of money, your getting a lower mileage car, probably cheaper maintance costs and not that common. IMO

50k on an M3 is not huge, but it'll be not far off due its Insp. 2 I think, which can be huge money.
For the money I would get an EVO. I prefer the M3 but for 20-23k you'll get a much better EVO than an M3.
An M3 for that money would be really scrapping the barrel. High mileage, thrashed, poss LHD, very early model etc.

Theres loads of left pegger E46 M3s round and they came out on a Y plate (2001).
Also, if you want one for that money it'll be due its first MOT so be careful.

IMO it'd be madness too buy an M3 for that price. Could end up putting it in for a service and walking out 10k lighter.

Do a search on Autotrader. Theres pages of Y plates, starting @ 27k for a LHD.
Also, make sure you get it from a main dealer. TBH I would be suprsied if, even in a year, you could get anything half decent for less than 28-30k.

We are talking a year or 2 down the line... they are currently £30k for an 02/52 with 20k... give it a year or 2 + the upcoming new version an they should drop to £20k-£23k for a reasonable one

Unlikely, but it happens. Mate of mines Boxster went in for a routine service, not long out of warrenty. Nothing major wrong with it, just bits and bobs really, but it came to 8k.
Admittedly, Porsche are steeper than BMW but it does unfortunately happen.

Yea, 18 months and you might get one. But, that 02 which seems good now, will have 50k on the clock and be out of warrenty, 3.5yrs old etc.
Not saying you won't find a good one and have no problems, but just make sure you got few K tucked away just incase.

Lovely cars though. Used to have regular spins in an early one, a Y plate. Good fun indeed.
