can I use the standard USB data cable? Or is that just for synchronising the calendar and stuff?

yeah you should be able to use the USB if you have the right software, Try downloading fMA (floats mobile agent), or a program called sendfile. If not, get a Bluetooth dongol, it is the best way by far.
