i know there are different ECUs for the XE, but will one actually work with the wrong egnine? I know it wont run 100%, but will it be driveable? im tempted to get one off ebay to see if i can get my car running again, then replace it with the right one when i can get hold of one.

If you get one of the same version of motronic then it should work alright.

I noticed yesterday the needle on the rev counter was flicking up to about 1.5k then back down to about 600. :S I think I should change the ECU and see if it helps! The car broke down the other day cos of a wiring fault with the altenator

I dont know what the letters mean, although it'd be interesting to know! As Myke said about the letters thing. But they dont need to be the same for the engine to run. Some will work, some wont. I had FP on mine, ran someone elses GX i think it was, to get me to PVS where i then plugged in Lee's FP off his yella one.
If you found out what the different letters meant, you may be able to make sure you're running the correct one. I'll have a search and see what I can discover.
