i am thinking of doing the above by following the tutorial, if i do this, does it damage the car or engine in the long run?

No sounds mint for first few days then gets actually quite annoying... (did mine 1 week ago on the gsi)

Don't bother.
A better airbox mod would be to block off the chamber on the left hand side of the box (were it's against the wing) and to remove any overlapping pipework inside the lid and lower section.
You want to try and get more air in, but reduce turbulence in the plenum chamber.
Consider cutting a second hole for another cold air feed to go into - remove the standard black cold air feed and replace it with a length of air ducting, then make a similar sized hole next to it for another pipe.

its not exactly going to give a stunning performance change either way.....
if you just want it to sound nice make swiss cheese out of it..

to be honest, only want it for the sound, because i just bought the car and i want it to sound better when driving.
when i get enough £££, i'd be gettin an exhaust and proper filter.

You should be able to pick up a cheap and nasty filter off ebay for about a tenner, so better to keep the airbox standard, get a cheap filter until you can afford something better.

Drill it geta performane panel filter and some cold air feeds. only cost ya about 30 quid and ya get a nice sound
