the sub settings have got 50, 80 and 125 with each 1 having +6 down to -6

I believe it's like this...
The sub settings allow you to turn down/up the sound at the frequencies 50,80,125hz. HPF (High Pass Filter) sets the frequency at which to send all sound under it to the sub instead of the higher range speakers. Input level, I'm fairly sure you're correct, and bass boost where you want it.
I could be wrong though.

It's just how far you can turn it up/down, -6 being the furthest it will go down, and +6 being the furthest it would go up. I always assumed (so I could be wrong) that going up or down on the sub setting by 1 turns the bass up/down by the same amount as when you turn the volume up/down by 1.
Richie could confirm this, though.

i used to have my sub set on 50hz +2 and the HPF set on the 125hz setting, so it removes all low bass frequencies and stops your tweeters sounding bad. (HPF means all frequencies above that selected will pass) if i wanted to be silly i would just change the sub to 80hz +6 and it would rattle the car to pieces. (anything below 50Hz is the best bass to be hearing really)
