Right havent got much of a clue but want a business website.

Wheres the best place to buy a name whats it cost and how does it work.
Do you kind of rent it each year?

I want to own the address and be able to move it to other service providers if need be!

Best options?

Many thanks and please layman terms

Go to http://www.123reg.co.uk and use thier search function to look to see if the domain name (www.yourname.com) is available. If it is then you can regester, it's something like £10 per 2 years... Then you need to get website hosting, 123rg do this at about £5 per month I think which is all you need for a smallish website and can be easily upgraded. You can change service provider if you like, but it's quite complicated if you don't know what your doing. You need to update the domain names DNS file which you can do using the 123reg control pannel which you get access to when you register the domain. Don't worry too much about that though cos it's not important as most prices are the same these days...
Then you need to get somone to make the site for you, or to make it yourself......

http://www.UKReg.com

Not the cheapest, but one of the best I've found for support and features.

You can register the domain name anywhere and point it to your web hosting - there's no need to have the two with the same company, so you can move hosting three times a week and still have it registered in one place.

www.compila.co.uk is the best I have found I have been with www.oneandone.co.uk they are too expensive and don't allow mail scripts unless you pay more.

You can get a domain name and 1 years hosting for as little as £12 a year.
If you have any problems they have good support as well.
Also they are based in Kent, they are a good company that don't rip you off
