tested my old 12inch car sub on my hi-fi, the sub is fcuked by the way!
worked for few mins then heard it go pop then hi-fi display flashing "PROTECT and PUSH POWER BUTTION"
the manual says if it flashed that in the display it means a big power was inputted???

so i disconnected it from mains and left for 10mins, working now, but the right speaker side which i tested the sub on does NOT work!???
any ideas??

mate i think you really need to leave stuff alone!

The car sub is 4 ohms. Hifi systems are only designed to take 8-16 ohms. Connecting the sub to it will have definatly secured that channels death. Needs repair i would have thought. I know so many ppl that have done this!

i know, but i like to play around with electrical things!
its one way i learn new things i guess, by trial and error

i connected my more powerfull Alpine sub to it long time ago and that worked fine for ages!!
but this time the sub i tried was damaged/blown and shite!
so its a common thing that people do then??
will the Hi-Fi channel defintaly be blown, and need repair??

how much do you think it will cost to repair that part of the Hi Fi??
i got a reminder about the gaurantee running out a few months ago to so im not covered!!

repair isnt usually cheap. best to take it somewhere for a quote (Dont tell them what you did tho, just say it stopped working) and see. You may be lucky, could be a SMF or something small

what do you think is actually wrong with it though, what is a SMF?

it powers up, and is ok for about 6 seconds BUT no sound at all even though equalisers are working and going up and down?? and then it starts to flash "protect/switch of" again

will it deffinatly need a PROFESSIONALL to repair it??
could it just be a fuse inside it that may have blown??

thanks for all help really appreciate it

SMF is a surface mount fuse, very small and requires precise soldering.

Youve defo blown a component on the amp, maybe even an output mosfet if it uses them. It needs pro repair.

just poped it open and had a good close look, theirs a massive circuit board to one side, and it seems fine, nothing looked/smelled blown or burnt out, the connection terminals are fine to, the power supply circuit had about 5 fuses and were fine too

i "Think" one of the relays has blown, as normally about 2 seconds after switching it on i can normally hear a relay switch "CLICK" but their is nothing at all now? but i havnt a clue which relay could be blown as theirs laods of them and they all "look" ok!

just had a look through my documents and apparently this is what i can do....

i can pick one of the Break down companies recommended repairers who will give me a estimate of repair and then i can legally take out a yearly breakdown cover for £50, which will pay the repairer all the cost for repair, sounds pretty good

Just because you cant see any damage it doesnt mean that the component hasnt blown. I work with fones, and get phones coming in with charging faults etc, the charging use has blown but it looks fine, if you take it to a pro, they will know what to test for.
