the one on the left is from a local motor factors (where i work), middle one is my 100k+ mile original vx and the right is from auto-vaux.

when i ordered a full set of these from autovaux the guy asked me if it was an early or late redtop, i said early. On the ones theyve sent me the little oil ring bit is slightly higher up the lifter than on the original vx one, is this the wrong one for my engine or is the vx one just really worn? Also the new one is a bit tight in the hole above the valve spring, again possibly just the old one is really worn?

The single lifter i got from work is an exact replica of the original except the oil ring is slightly wider, but is still dead center when placed next to the old lifter.

so if i got the wrong ones would they fit at all or am i just being paranoid?

Seeings as the heads are interchangable and virtually the same then I am suprised they are different tbh.

sorted it, for anybody that cares this is the difference-

'a friend of mine who has a late redtop from a calibra said that the later models have lifters with a bit bigger o-ring and he had those later lifters. Mine that is an earlier model the lifres have smaller o-ring, I think that you have the wright lifters and a bit better from your old ones'

and

'the ring is an oil channel, obviously - it grabs pressurised oil from the oil feed hole as it moves up and down in the bore - a wider channel will effectively supply the lifter with more oil, so it's possibly that these later ones might be quieter when they age a bit.

they are slightly heavier though than the early narrow ring types.'

I'm guessing they mean Coscast and GM when they mean early and late then...

The Coscast heads were fitted to cars of all ages, as were the GM heads.

I would assume early as the older style rounded tooth cam belt and late as the engine with the square tooth cam belt and autotensioner.
