Its been getting progressivly worse now for a few days, basically started last monday...

Started out as a really faint rattle, kinda like the exhaust heat shield, so as I knew that was loose as it is, it got whipped off & the rattle 'seemed' to go...

Now for the past 2-3 days it has started again, but now sounds like a tin can with a marble in it, but only when the car is moving. I know its not the engine, as it idles & revs ok enough, even when using the clutch to give it a bit of load (and burn out the clutch at the same time), but when driving above 10mph, it starts up. Also when going over a bump it reacts to it & clunks...

I've checked all under the car, checked brakes on both sides as best as I can (as until now I've not been able to remove any wheels as didnt have a key to take off the GSi caps, but thanks to GC crew for pointing out a way ) but all that seems ok, hit a few bits with a hammer & nothing moved, suspension seems ok too...

Worrying incase its a bearing on its way or CV/Drive shaft... I've been getting a bit of vibration through the wheels to from about 45mph+ aswell, so reckon this could be linked to the rattle problem?

Checked all bodywork & fittings, they all seem fine too...

i had similar noise on mine, after much head scratching it turned out to be the little stone guard thing on the back of the front brake disks. Its really thin metal so when it touches the disk it sounds really tinny

Shafts/CVs generally only knock when you're turning, or if you come off load but leave it in gear with no accelerator and slow down like that.

Vibration I'd check separately, have the wheels balanced, check the pressures and track it, see if that cures that (possible unrelated) problem.

will be getting tracking/balancing tomorrow.

the rattle is unnaffected by acceleration/breaking/cornering, only by road vibration...

Checked all in engine bay & everything, and cant find anything which is loose or has any play

adam it does sound from around the drivers wheel area, I've sat in both sides while the car is moving & thought same from both.

Going to have another look at dinner & nip to a garage get a 2nd opinion on it

worried the wheel might want to take a turning when i dont

Sorted!

ended up being the split-pin catching on the wheel-cap on the inside so rattling like mad!

plus they gave me the lil key thing to undo the caps so all is good again

if I had the key thing I could of sorted this within 5 mins of first hearing it
