It depends on what kind of Section you go into, as with most jobs.

We just setup a new network in our office, i look after the IT 99% of the time but as im only a trainee design engineer by trade i dont have much free time to spend on the IT.
A while back when i was too busy we paid a local chap £10 per termination of CAT5e cable to our patch panel, i think there was around 50 cables, so he made £500 + VAT when all he needed to use was a £2.99 termination tool, dead easy.

Word of warning, you need to take in everything they teach and do studies outside of the course because you wont learn everything.

When I was in college they ran a course that sounded like that, and 99% of the students were just gimps and came out still knowing nothing. I took the *advance* course they offered at college with computing and it was utter shit, when I went for my job in the city of london they werent interested in my silly qualifications, they were more interested in my home setup and what I had cooked up using the limited resources I have.

With things like this your heart needs to be in it to succeed, its not as well paid as everyone makes it out to be - you need to be shit hot to make 30k+ type pay.

Good luck.

I did two years of uni in computer science and AI, didn't get on with it in the second year due to moving uni and therefore dropped it all, looked around for a job. Now i'm 20, working for a very large worldwide company on 18k doing database programming (Progress 4GL main language - awesome DB/Programming Language, VB Script, VB, Javascript, HTML, And Progress WebSpeed (web side to progress); I am extremely lucky, I was there at the right time really and excelled in my interview.

I'm in IT.

Unless you got a Degree, expect to be on around 9k-14k with an HNC/HND.

With a degree hope for around 18k - 22k in your first year.

Getting a job is the hard bit. I was lucky and walked into IBM a few weeks after Uni finished.

What kind of stuff are you interested in Dean? Technical? Support? Programming?

Oh and most companies wont go near you unless you have relevant experience. So try and do a work placement or sandwich year along with your course.

I did that and worked at HP for a year.

Dean - Did you not go thru the RAF?

I'm doing HNC Computing at college right now, its easy enough but as said you wont learn to much.

Hopefully doing a 2 + 2 course with work placement and a degree
