I just broke down driving home, it could have been worse as the aa got me home ok and quickly, but i now need some advise.
The pedals all the way back completely and i thoguht it was the clutch cable, but the guy told me its the clutch cable arm. does anyone know how much this will cost to replace and how hard it is, its a c20xe btw.
anyone else been towed, god it feels so fuckin awful

Can you not say it was a C20XE - it makes it seem worse than it is.

mine went whilst it was in the calibra.
think the arm was around £30ish.
i had mr clutch fit it for me with a new clutch at the same time.
the early type arms were a twisted bit of metal welded to a rod which tended to break at the weld.
newer ones are cast with a different method of fixing arm to pivot, which apparently lasts a lot longer.
if it's the early type then you could have it re-welded.

Does it look like this? (if this is the arm on the top of the box)

arm was £30 or £40. something like that.
you'll tell because it will either be a flat piece of grey metal bent(twisted) through 90degrees with a fork at one end and the rod welded to the other; or a solid piece of cast metal painted black with a brass or zinc plated looking rod/pivot at the end.

Out of all the stuff in the engine bay, you've probably got more space to work on the clutch arm than anything else.

Joff's posted the early one with the twist.
this is the later one
poor pic but the arm wasn't the subject.

i paid mr clutch £140ish to supply and fit a new clutch for me.
i gave them the new arm and they chucked that in for me for nowt.
can't be too difficult if someone is willing to do it for you for nothing. unless it has to come out to do the clutch anyway.

don't forget the amount of extra leverage you get from the pedal,
long bar from the pivot foot side, short bar from the pivot cable side, so the force is amplified substantially.
you may not be able to operate it by hand.
can you see that it's broken?

and close up
so yea, u can definately see that its snapped and i presume thats the old style yea?
i just cant see how its attached. i phoned someone to fix it and until hes seen it he doesnt no how hard itll be to do, says he may need to take the engine out to do it

yeah thats a clean snap, and old style.
when mine went to mr clutch they said the clutch could have been on its way out, which may have caused the arm to break.
dunno how true that was, but i was happy to have a new clutch fitted while it was there.
it's definately not an engine out job. it can probably all be done from the access panel under the gearbox.
you not got a haynes for cav/cally/astra?
someone on mig will guide you if you have an account on there.

one more question;
i spoke to a mechanic at a garage earlier and he said the arm broke for a reason, and that if i weld it back on it will put extra strain on another component and thatll give way. is this right?

It could do, but the arm would be more likely to just break at the weld again further down the line.

same as what i was told by mr clutch.
they claimed the clutch was starting to turn duff, and was getting stiffer to engage/disengage; and that this was what caused my arm to break.
for the price of supply and fit a new clutch, i didn't arghue and let them get on with it.
at theh same time a colleagues clutch arm snapped on his rover 200. he had his re-welded by a family friend, and hasn't let him down since. this was around 9months ago.
take a gamble, it may be ok. just don't cry about it if it does go wrong again in the near future.
