i have a forum on my own dedicated somewhere in the states, the database is rapidly growing and i need some way to regularly back it up automatically, i have registered 10 gmail accounts, so in theory i have 10gb of backup space, all i need is a php script to run as a cron and dump the sql file to a zip and email it to mysitebackup*month*@gmail.com, anyone know of one? or fancy writing one for me? cheers

cant be arsed, the db is only 20mg so no point in backing up lil bits of it. Why use up my bandwith when google/my hosts have stupidly fast connections

right well if its only 20mb you're not going to need silly amounts of gmail accounts.

'cant be arsed' - that sounds like someone whos going to be donkey punched when their host goes down and they have no data!

Even 20mb on 56k isnt bad, if you're got ADSL/cable you shouldnt even be questioning this!

come up with a better, reliable way to get the db backed up remotely, regularly.... Automatically

I just want summit to be constantly running so it will be backed up when im on holiday etc etc! At the moment im just using phpMyAdmin do dump the db, and i rarely get round to it!

shell somewhere on someones unix box, simple bash script to bzip it up and then wget/scp/ftp the file over to the other box. Remembering to rename the file to relate to the date, and shove it on crontab to run every 7th day.

What he said.

Or do it the ghey GUI way and simply run a backup to dump the contents of the db into a load of SQL statements.
Or you could export it all as a lovely CSV.
Or just mirror the db server on your local PC.
