Ok guys i need help,
Having finished uni in May studying Business & BIT i have been working in the family fast food business ever since. However, i have recently got a new job as a call handler (started 10/1/05) in an IT business. Now, having worked there for only 3 days i am beginning to get bored of the process of my job. Basically, when people have a problem with the software that this company sells, they call the helpdesk (me) to log the problem into Epicor.

Now having been watching people use Epicor i have found it to be quite easy to use so i have just begun to log calls into the system today, for technical staff to resolve. Now after doing this for about 3 hrs i have become very bored with the job as its not challenging. Now to make matters worse, the help desk telephone number all runs to the same phone that i work on. Basically, if the phone is busy, the receptionist takes the msg and sends me the email in which i have to call back to make the same arrangements as above. To add further insult to injury i am required to work 9am-6pm during weekdays all for a whopping salary of 11k which after tax and NI leaves me with practically nothing.

I am currently considering leaving the job only after 3 days as i have come to conclude that this is not my type of job, as its not challenging and boring. But the trouble is that i dont really have much work experience so that is currently the stumbling block. I might just ask my head of department the role of my job and whether he had another job that is more challenging.

But what would you guys do? Stay or go whilst im on my probationary period? I could earn around the same money working in my family business and thats only doing around 25hrs a week.

all IT jobs you pretty much start off at the bottom unless your specialist, whther you went to uni or left school, that kind of job will only become rewarding and challenging once you have proved your telephone manner and that you can log the calls, as then no doubt they will train you up, for 1st / 2nd or 3rd line support (which i assume is what you want to do?) personally i would have a chat with your manager and tell them the truth that you are getting bored and you are not being challenged, he/she should respect you for your honesty and take your comments on board...

2b honest i would stick the job for about a month or so, and see whether they take your comments on board and train you in other areas if they don't then leave, after all you have only been there 3 days

Firstly i'd ask for another job that you can get stuck into, and secondly i'd ask for a pay rise. That is a stupid amount of money for someone who has a degree. I personally would not even get out of bed for 11k a year, never mind working 5 days 9 - 5.

As you said, you can fall back on your job with your family.

you dont ask for a pay rise after 3 days work, yes maybe ask for a different job but not a payrise

whether you would get out of bed or not for 11k a year, many people do pugnut... i make just over 12k and am lead engineer with 3 engineers below me...... IT industry is saturated and there aint the money there used to be unless your specialised..........

I'd personally look for some graduate positions/schemes as I did. They pay a hell of a lot more, especially if you're willing to commute to London, and will look much better on your CV when you leave

So Tim would u suggest that i leave asap. Im not sure whether i would want to do IT anymore. Plus this jobs is really annoying me the fact that its 9am-6pm only for 11k. If i enjoyed the job then fine but the fact is i dont.

Tech support will never pay well though. For any money in IT you need to either be a consultant, or a more development/architectural role. Helpdesk jobs rarely pay well, unless you're the manager...

Pug Nut: I have a mate who started his own company doing support for local small businesses, small network installs, adsl, etc, etc, etc... He's not what I'd call a guru to say the least, but he still brings home £60k as he can avoid so much tax... Get companies on support contracts! Do the job well the first time and then it's free money (unless things keep breaking cos you used shite equipment)...
