Teenage car enthusiast killed after collision
by DAVID POWLES and CHERYL SMITH
A TEENAGE car enthusiast has died after his vehicle careered off the road and smashed into the side of a house.
recommend this article to a friend Tom Sandars, 19, was killed when his Ford Puma crashed head-on into the side of a semi-detached house in Hawkins Lane, Burton, last night.
Today, tributes were paid to the 'popular' Stretton teenager, known among friends as 'Bandit', because he was born with one arm and drove with a prosthetic limb.
His death occurred on the same day that he and his car, which he spent thousands of pounds improving, were featured in the latest edition of Redline, a national enthusiast magazine.
As a mark of respect, Burton Car Club, of which he was a member, has closed down its website and started a tribute board.
A message on the website said: "For those who knew Tom Sandars, aka Bandit, you will know just how much this bloke was recognised throughout the car communities — the news has shaken the nation.
"Our thoughts go to the family and friends of this great bloke."
A post on the message board said: "He will be missed. The only lad that didn’t have a bad word to say about anyone."
Another said: "There’s no justice in this world, how can such a good man be taken so young?"
The teenager, who lived with his parents in Nene Close, worked as a technician at Rolls-Royce in Derby.
A close friend and fellow car enthusiast told the Mail: "He called himself Bandit due to his prosthetic arm. That was exactly the sort of person he was.
"He was really chuffed to be in the magazine. I texted him last night to tell him how good the feature was and never got a reply. Now I know why.
"He was just the nicest bloke you could imagine. He was a real laugh and really, really popular. Nothing ever got him down.
"Everyone is just in shock as to how this would happen because he was the safest driver I know and when you look at the road there is no explanation as to why he would come off."
Following the accident, which occurred at 7.30pm, Mr Sandars had to be freed from the car by firefighters and was taken to Burton’s Queen’s Hospital, but he was pronounced dead shortly after 8pm.
A mother-of-three, who did not wish to be named, was in the house at the time of the crash with her eight-year-old son.
She said: "I heard a loud bang but I just thought it was one of the brewery wagons going past at first.
"It was a real shock when we heard what had happened and I am just glad we weren’t in the room at the time.
"I feel for the youngster’s family as I have a son his age."
Police have launched an investigation into the crash but say that at this stage his death is not being treated as suspicious.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Pc Christopher Earl on 08453 302010.
