surely the greater the surface area the more friction created as the air passes through it, slowing the air down and causing a build up of heat with the increased friction

The spray is dirt retention oil. If your engine management light comes on, you're spraying too much or spraying it on whilst the filter is fitted to the car.
The foam on the filter still gives excellent filtration without the oil, but you should still use it.
We've never heard of this affecting any other Corsa C.

I once had a BFO fliter. I sprayed that cleaning shit on it, and when I would drive the car, it sucked the spay crap through the cone and clogged up the Mass Air Flow sensor.
Vauxhall charged a fortune to replace it too. Soon after that, I bought a Quickshift filter.

Which is unoiled dry stainless steel mesh and will only filter around 65% of airborne particles...

10 micron particles isn't something you'd want getting into your engine - and you'll be getting a lot of those through with mesh.
