ie, making your exhaust shorter..
or example mke the exhaust come out of the side of the car behind the front wheels?

no surely it'd reduce back pressure with is required on NA cars and a loss if anything? could be talking out f my arse here though

Same net effect as increasing bore so yes, in most cases. Can lose power though in the same way that an exhaust which is too large will due to the disproportionate reduction in back pressure.
Increasing bore is easier and you can keep the cat, and it'll also warm up quick enough if you keep back pressure before the mid box which will be less hassle at MOT time.

But surely if you get the engine set up it would run more Bhp, because idealy an engine wants to run without any exhaust at all. Think of a dragster (i realize they are not NA)

yes if it is mapped then you'd see a gain but they require back pressure for low down torque. also if the major restriction is further back than the point you cut it at it's not going to do much good
