Diesels will be dearer to buy but cheaper to run...if your planning on high miles then get a diesel otherwise get a petrol car

The 1.9DT will be quicker than the 1.4, especially over 60-70ish. It'll be better on fuel with the same top end roughly.

if you;re getting a diesel engine at least get a turbo diesel!

normal diesels are slow as hell, whereas a TD will still give great mpg and performance.
bullitproof engines too

Driving a 306 1.4 resembles the feeling of flogging a dead horse The 1.9D is also a bit crap. The TD/HDi's are alot better and there's very little in insurance costs. Personally I wouldn't have either the 1.4 or the N/A 1.9D when you could have a TD for next to nothing more...

306 D Turbo is brilliant, really nippy and great on motorways, i'm sure my 306 would kill my 1.4 16v Corsa up a hill

get the 1.9 td 306, they're alot quicker than the 1.4 petrol, and you can turn the boost up on the turbo for extra horses! Loads of torque too

Exactly. They have about the same bhp as a 1.4 16v, but bags more pulling power. Ok they may be crap at accelerating in the low gears, but in 5th it will pull like anything when you boot it, and they have about the same top end as the Vaux 1.4 (dunno how it compares to the Pug 1.4 tho).

Had a few drives in a standard 1.9D and 1.4 petrol 306s. Fuel wise there didn't seem much in it but power wise the petrol was much quicker.

I wouldnt say 1.5 seconds to 60 is ALOT faster when we're talking about cars which take 15-16 seconds peanut. They are both slower than the TD

None of the lower end 306 petrol models, nor the D/TD were made for off the line speed FFS. You don't expect the D to be quick, but if you floored it everywhere you'd get further in it than the 1.4. The TD is a bit quicker but it's not from the line.
No-one buys a car with a mechanically injected diesel (turbo) engine for speed anyway.

Yeah, on my diesel corsa it keeps giving power right up to that, but VW engines have a diff feel to them, they go really nice up to about 3000rpm, then you want to change, its just the feeling.. don't really go nicely past 3000rpm, but will!
