mini dv is the tape, no reason to have anything but a tape in a camcorder, tape holds about 15gig of data (1hr) get the canon mv700, can probably get it for about £250. It has been replaced by the 800 now which is shite!

that one finishes in 20mins, bargain! Honestly its a great camera, i work in a camera shop and have never had a problem.
Do you have a dvd writer? If so get the plain mv700, if not the mv 700i may be useful as it has dv in AND out, which means once you have edited the video you can dump it back on the tape

Have you seen the note on the canon outlet items? VAT is to be added to the end price?

Mini DV is what ya want - its the standard thing and the cams will have firewire out for editing on pc etc
I would look at cannons though, especially over a sony handy cam, as the quality isnt too hot on the sony handy cams
Also note that when it says Firewire, it is usally only an output - ie: you can only take stuff off the tape. IF you want to dump stuff from your pc back onto the camera, you will need to check that it is In/Out Firewire (something like that, been a long time since i did all my video editing courses etc).
If your serious about a camera, then Cannon XL1S its the daddy (even if people will say the sony stuff is better) - just look at 28 Days (they used the widescreen lens which cost 1k ontop though ) and you will see the quality

yesh dv in and out means you can dump back to the camera, it was more nessacary when dvd writers were expensive. the XL1s is awesome but the mv700 is perfect for larking about, no gimmicks you dont need, just really good quality video!
