pc starts as normal then comes up load in safe mode etc or last known workin mode or start as normal, can get on in safe mode but
wont start normally, jus a black screen 
tried last system restore point on safe mode
at college jus now so hopin i get the remedy by time i get home

Have you:
a) installed any new software lately?
b) installed any new hardware lately?
c) updated any drivers lately?
d) ran anything dodgy?

You get the black screen after the Windows XP logo and the green loading bar dissapears off the screen?

like willay says, could be something you did...
out of interest, on the startup menu, instead of selecting Safe Mode, try VGA Mode & see if that works...
if it does, your graphics drivers could be corrupt and/or your running in too high a frequency for the monitor to handle...
