on idle the engine is fine, up to 2.5k is ok, but at 3k the engine sounds very tappy, cant hear after tthat as the exhaust is too loud.
what would cause thhis and how could it be sorted?

doesn't sound tappety related to me.
Yo ucna put it in a low gear at higher speed, so the throttle is hardly open, then you will be able ot hear the sound as exhaust shoudl be quieter,
Failing that, stick it on a 3k idle with spanner technique and then use a long screwdriver to and press it on to different bits of the engine to track down the sound.
[spanner method is to space the throttle cable out just by the TB to open a bit to raise idle speed]

over 3k is sounds alright, sam as under 3k but at 3k its sounds really tappy. usually with the throttle closed, and the momenntum of the car keeping the revs up.
