when you go into task manager, how much of your commit charge is used?
When was the last time you cleared the page file on shut down?
How big is your page file at the moment, and how much space is left on your C: drive

With XP and a heavily used computer if you dont clear the page file on shutdown you will have performance loss.
To get XP to clear the page file on each shutdown, get a 3rd party tweaking app or use regedit from your run prompt, and navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\
Memory Management
Look for the value name 'ClearPageFileAtShutdown' , and change the value to 1. Then shutdown your machine.

It wont work for everyone, its just one of the solutions for poor performance in 2000/XP, every time your applications in the background go lazy they get put into your page file to keep your physical memory free for currently working/open programs. Over time the page file gets full of various crap that just keeps getting overwritten. If you clear the page file on each shutdown, then every time you boot your machine the page file will be clear and hopefully the system should seem a bit more optimized.

everything will work fine. The page file is only temporary virtual memory.

Another one to try is clearing out the prefetch folder.
Go to start, run, type prefetch and delete everything in that folder.
Listen to the bloke that recently passed the Microsoft Exam for windows XP

bet it wont help knowing my luck did u make sure you cleared the prefetch folder too?
If its still shit you can try disabling a load of services in services.msc and startup apps in msconfig but i wont be responsible for your actions

lol defrag is always like that, with huge files such as ISO's the percentage wont shift, but when it gets to all teh tiddlers it should start to shoot up.
In startup apps you will just go into msconfig, click the startup tab and uncheck boxes at your discretion for apps that you dont need or no longer use at startup, and some others that you will just have to judge for yourself.
You can usually tell if its system related by looking under the Command column, anything in \Windows, dont disable, alot of stuff thats in \Program files, disable but make sure its not anything to do with norton/firewalls ect.
If you have an Nvidia card make sure u uncheck NvCpl, NvMcTray and nwiz, and also if you have nero, disable Nerocheck.

There is also a registry mod that is good if you have more than 512mb of RAM, it keeps the entire XP system core in physical memory and boosts performance.
