I'm getting a new Desktop but i'm still undecided:
1.DELL Dimension 8400
-Intel Pentium 4 Processor 630 with HT technology(3.00GHz,800fsb,2Mb cache)
-1024Mb pc-3200 dual channel DDR2 400Mhz
-160GB SATA HDD,8Mb databurst cache
-Dell 19in. E193FP value flat panel monitor
-128Mb PCIe X16 ATI Radeon X300 SE(dvi/vga tv out via s-video port and dual monitor support)
-16x max. DVD +/-RW double layer write capability
-Win XP home edition
or
2.Build my own desktop from parts
-AMD Athlon 64 3000 939 ns
-1024Mb DDR kingmax/pqi ram
-160 Gb SATA HDD,western digital
-LG 920P 19' ctr monitor
-NX 6600GT VTD 129
-dvd/rw LG gsa-4163b
-MB MSI K8N
The price of the 2nd PC is a bit cheaper but if you look at the specs it out performs the Dell pc(on paper).But i have experience with Dell,i have an old desktop at home wich surved me great over the past 6 years.Think they are relialble,and on the other hand i don't really trust no name machines...but i don't know...I'm not a heavy gamer,i use my PC for net surfing,CAD programs,3D Studio MAX,gaming.
So what would you go for:
1.sexy DELL
2.tuned machine
Any experience with Dell?

i would look at using a matrox card for cad and 3d modeling mate - they perform a lot lot better than any nvidia/ati card you can get

Build your own and you know 100% whats in it and you can upgrade when new stuff comes knowing full well which stuff would need upgrading.

i got a dell they great machines,... but once this goes out of date i am building my own.. plus u dont get the warrenty if u build you own..
so if u just looking for a overall pc with Reliability which is as important as anything then get the dell. unless u know your way around the pc

Im looking at building my own media center in the near future.
Watch/record TV, watch DVDs, use as a stereo, watch freeview, all through a widescreen LCD screen using windows XP media center edition and a remotte control

I got warranty on all the individual parts though? so technically I have a warranty (3 years as well)

ahh a man after my own heart! hehe i am doing the same thing i got a Pioneer 43" Plasma with HDMI connetion from pc to my screen and since with my screen i can do to things at once so... watching a film in one side of the tv and with the other on PC with CorsaSport probably in the background while msn is running hehe

pc is just a 2.226mhz P4 with a gig of ram and 128mb titanium GeForce Graphics card... wats urs?

hehe yea me 2! gonna have it water cooled overclocked like a Bi**h
getting 8MB internet connection for £30 a month! and 1TB of harddrive space ( thats right Terabyte baby! )

Ah right yeah... to be honest, if you go to a computer trade fair ( http://www.theshowguide.co.uk to find your nearest) you'll usually pick a decent custom system up for less than you'd pay for the sum of the parts, oddly enough. Most of the traders I know also offer aftersales support and warranty.
Another benefit over Dell is you won't have a rebadged Lexmark printer, the cartridges for which you can only buy from Dell usually, and which will cost more than an arm and a leg.

i hate lexmark... £20 for a blank ink cartridge! yea right the printer cost me £40  i just Fcuk that and got a Brother Laser B&W printer for £99 which gives u 2,500 sheets of print compared to lexmark of say 500 if ur lucky and the laser ink only cost like £40..
