Yeah there is no standard they will take a view on the value then 'offer' it to you which you can decline or accept.

I've just done this. My p reg 1.4 sport got written off in april. Top price we found for it (glasses guide) was £2650 but that was forecourt retail price. Private sale prices varied between £1500 and £2000. As I bought my car privately I was told they would only pay out a private value. it had higher than average mileage but was absolutely immaculate! They offered my £2000 for it but I said I wanted the car back for salvage as i wanted to re-use the colour coded rear bumper, sideskirts & arches, so they said I could have £1600 & the car. Not all insurance companies will do this tho, you just have to ask.

i was quite lucky to be honest. when tesco bloke looked on autotrader the only pulsar local to me was up for about 5k. i told him i paid 4.5k for the car and he said well the best i can do is give you what you paid for it 12 months ago. also they let me buy the car back for £800 and i just sold it for 1.5k
if you get a decent person to speak to they aint all that bad. i would recommend tesco all day with they way they handled my claim, but then i dont know if that was because it was not my fault
