My mk3 Astra has the X14XE engine. The inlet manifold is different to the one that's used on the same engine in a Corsa B (throttle body is at the top as opposed to down the side).

I'm assuming that as the actual engines are the same, it would be pretty much a straight swap?

Also, can anyone tell me if I would need to change the ECU as well, or if I can still use my existing one?

One final question, as the car has an auto box, and the auto ECU reads from the main ECU, I wouldn't need to change that as well?

the only real differences are in the inlet manifolds. you will be able to do a straight swop, and use your existing ecu. although the map on the x16xe ecu is slightly different, but it will run the car no probs.

The "L" in X14XEL stands for low output/hi torque. The inlet manifolds on the xel have a longer tract lenght and promote more torque at the expense of a few bhp

There are no difference between the x14xe and x14xel heads. The blocks are also the same.

although, that last comment may be false, i have never found a difference, but vauxhall list them as different part numbers. was once told the valves were different. will still run fine whatever combination of inlet/head/block/ecu you use though.

So to do the conversion, would I need anything else apart from the following:

- cam cover
- inlet manifold (lower and upper)
- throttle body
- fuel injection rail
- EGR valve

My engine is definately an X14XE - there is no such thing as an X14XEL, only an X16XEL.

Sam, there IS a difference between the Astra and Corsa 1.4 16v engines, and its as Corsa808 stated, so you might find that the engine code is indeed different.

the X14XE has 90bhp, whilst the X14XEL has 88bhp, but better low-down torque.

There is no such engine as the X14XEL! Here is the engine code list for the mk3 Astra from EPC, FFS!

As you can see, the only XEL engines are the X16XEL, and the C18XEL.

Why does this fabled engine code not show up on EPC then?

the block itself is an X14XE, but the longer inlet tract is responsible for it being an X14XEL. You are incorrect, Vauxhall are correct, since the engine is agknowledged as an XEL.

The engine doesn't have inlet 'tracts' like on the Astra X16XEL or X14XE/X16XE engines in a Corsa, as you can see from my engine bay pic above, the throttle body is mounted on a sort of chamber, there are no tracts...

Err what the hell is that engine you have there Sam?

Never seen that before

Mantzel I don't think will fit that to be honest mate, looks totally different to the XEL series engines I have seen which look identical to the 16XE engines other than the inlet manifold has a bent shoulder.

All 1.4 16v mk3 Astras look like this.

It's the X14XE engine but with a different inlet manifold for some reason. On every bit of documentation I've got for the car (mostly Vauxhall) it states the engine as X14XE too.

If someone can tell me where on the block it would have the engine code stamped, I will take pictures to prove this!

Winner . Ive always wondered where the design for my inlet manifold came from, and why it had changed so much from the Corsa B's design, looks like ive found its origin.



I recon the heads are the same, but you'll need the lower inlet manifold of a corsa X14/X16XE .

Do you have any pics of your engine minus engine cover/throttle body trunking?

Yeah Greasemonkey put an engine like mine in a Corsa for his mate but he used the inlet manifold etc. from the old knackered Corsa engine and put it on the new Astra one, he said the heads were the same.
