GTI will win IMO purely based on the fact that it is the better car overall, not the fastest or the cheapest granted (not that they usually care) but they didn't vote it their overall car of the year for nothing... Jeremy absolutely loves it

Auto car this week had the road test

Vauxhall beats them all hands down or straight line speed handling and ride quality

They test drove the new focus ST abroad and reckon this will beat them all. It has 223 BHP offical figures from Ford not 217 BHP as originally stated

Autoexpress prefered the Golf as it was more refined and better ride, don't know why they didn't test a cheaper Astra with smaller wheels if they were going to come to that conclusion.

The car mags are strange! They go on about the GTis losing their raw driving appeal and complain about them becoming softer and more refined compared to the Mk1 GTi but then they choose the GTi over the Astra because of those reasons

I don't agree with that at all. Granted its a good car but for over 20K I could think of several better cars to buy. Plus they are very popular on the road - seen alot recently all gun metal grey

Yeah but the best they could do to criticise the Astra was that it didn't ride well - and it has 19" wheels. Its not going to ride well is it.
