woah!
That's a awesome package! 10 meg and sky!
Can you use telewest stuff on a NTL line?
Interesting you brought up this, as I was thinking about what internet we're gonna go for at our uni house. I looked through mail the other day and noticed fucking 'NTL' shit... so I assume I'm stuck with those expensive wankers.

For most adsl providers other than ntl you will probably need a bt line i think. I take it you havent got a bt phone line there then?

No I'm guessing my line is NTL... but if that's cable, surely telewest will work?

Nismo your mr Internet...
I've got a student house in Reading. The house had broad band last year (apparently) - I've seen mail from NTL for the previous owners saying "Pay or you will be disconnected".
8 people will be living in this house.
What do you reckon we should do internet wise? I'm unsure what speed we need. A lot probably won't use it much, but I like to download stuff. The people who won't use it much won't want to spend top dollar, but I don't want 8 of us sharing 1mb or anything either.
What are our options? are we stuck with NTL?

Brad:
Postcode: AL10 8RY Valid postcode
BT Phone Number: Telephone number not entered
Exchange Information
Exchange: HATFIELD (LNHAT)
Estimated distance from Exchange: 1.7 km
Option 2 (LLU) Status: NOT ENABLED
Option 4 (BT) Status: ENABLED
Predicted Service Availability
Option 2 (LLU) ADSL: NO SERVICE
Option 2 (LLU) SHDSL: NO SERVICE
SureStream: NO SERVICE
SMPF ADSL: NO SERVICE
BT Option 4 ADSL: 2048 kbps
From those results id say go for cable , with normal BT Wholesale broadband through any ISP you wont get faster than 2Mb.

nismo your the man, so ypu think the ntl 3mb at £37.99 a month is the one to go for
as adsl needs bt line rental at £10.50 a month and then its £27.99 a month for 2mb connection
ntl doesnt need a bt phone line if im correct yes ??

yeah , well if its going to be shared you would really want more than 2Mb , but you wont get any more than that with a normal BT line (with ADSL) in that area. So cable is your best option
if you were in an LLu enabled area i could have got you on the ADSL2+ trials (24Mb) but your not

ntl cable, 35 quid a month 3mb - a month or so its getting upgrading to 10mb.
tbh, telewest and ntl are pretty much similar pricing, offer the same stuff, deals differ slightly but when the years out they will probably do a deal with the merge stuff anyways.
and no ntl doesnt need a btl infact it doesnt have squat to do with bt - totally different technology as well (in theory cable is better over ADSL just more expensive).
Just need ntl to install one of their grey boxes outside and install the cable modem
what you do need is a half decent router, whether it be a wired switch router (personal choice) or wireless etc. Also i would get everyone to install Du Meter or the likes and keep an eye on bandwidth - even though ntl arnt too fussy about going over 30gb a month, as soon as you start hitting 100gb+ they will send you letters and the lark.....
edit - also visit www.cableforum.co.uk - loads of ntl techs etc good information about ntl/telewest products and services, status's etc etc
