The Xe lives no more at the moment, was coming out of a slip road took it to some revs and their was a loud bang or pop come from under the bonnet. engine cut out and i rolled to a stop. Got it home with the AA recovery originally thought it was the timing belt but this morning i took the cam belt cover off to find it still there. I assumed any damage done has been done so trying to hand crank it over to see whether the cams and bottom pulley were turning failed. One click of starter motor proved to me that the bottom fulley was not doing anything. The car however is turning over and i heard a bang as obviously the piston hit and bent another valve (all getting replaced anyway so not to worry) did this once to try and get an idea what was wrong and have left it since. Just need to get it to RAR for fixing now. Roy at RAR reckons it is repairable but will cost a few hundred. Doh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ah well ill just have to concentrate on moving into my flat just now then, lucky it is 100yards from my work. Lucky the car is a luxury

Yeah from what i can tell the crank has sheared off as you said and basically done the damage that a snapped timing belt would do to the head. Not sure how severe yet but will find out once it gets to my usual garage. Soooooooooo glad i had AA membership well worth the £8 a month

if your getting someone else to sort it you could save a bit on their labor charge by stripping it down yourself.

Dad actually thinks it could be something to do with the flywheel as it does sound when the starter went that it was very free moving so id rather not take things to peices and end up making a mess of things
