Ive just downloaded a trial of InDesign CS2 as a package to play about with.
Looks slightly similar to photoshop, but its aimed more towards publishing then imagery.
Anyone here use it?

Its quite good, but dont use it.
Normally use quark for publishing really.
The best thing about InDesign is that you can directly edit your .jpgs / .eps / .ai's in the application. Saves having to open illustrator, save, and then update the image (like you would in quark)
The only problem is not many people use it in the industry, so is useless if you want to send something to print.

Quark is the industry standard. I dont know anywhere that doesnt use it.
I use it all day everyday, great program.
To import a picture you draw a box, and press Apple T (if on mac, dont know about pc)
We have the entire CS2 package here at work, only use photoshop and illustrator most of the time tho
What are you looking to produce Bart?

Thats what i was thinking. Illustrator is not a production program, its design. Saying that ive made a few jobs in illustrator where i wanted to use effects etc. But 90% of the time i use quark

What are you looking to produce Bart?
So Quark to produce the, for example, front cover of a magazine?
So basically you do your graphics in photoshop and then make your layout in Quark?
What programs would you use for a portfolio/brochure type thing? Im thinking about making one

liam - yes i would make any illustrations, images etc in photoshop/illustrator, save them as .eps / tiffs / jpgs and then import into quark to sort layound and type and text i would need.
Never use photoshop for text as it is pixel based, quark is linear based, so large documents (ie billboards) the text will still be crisp.
I would use quark for brochures, i have done many times.
Bart - would defo do what you are doing in Quark.

Thanks mate. I have used quark a few times for files, and for some reason find it an absolute impossibility to export a PDF as I get a postscript printer error every single time. I follow the help section every single time as well and it just tells me to fuck off every time!

Exporting a Quark file to PDF?
Look for a website called Pass 4 Press.
Industry standard in creating PDF's.

Depends on the printers. You can use the option 'Collect for output' under File. This will save the quark document, and images/fonts/swatches used. Then just supply them with that folder.
Or yes you can create a PDF, its upto you/the printers.
Also think how you want it printed, 4 colour/2 colour. Digital or litho. If printing 4 colour, make sure all images/graphics are changed to CMYK.

LiamC - would it be ok for text if i was to do as ICY said, use photoshop for imags/ backgrounds etc, then Indesign for layout and Illustrator for Text? or is Illustrator's text pixel based?
i have a copy of Quark, but never used it. currently downloading InDesign and illustrator cs2 at the moment.

Indesign is fine for text mate as far as I can see. You can tell because if you export it as a PDF the text doesnt pixelate when you zoom further and further in.
Or thats what Ive been told anwyay!
