....ok about 5years ago i used to do a lot of mtb'ing, mainly just doing the odd bit of jumping in a quarry, doing some "downhilling" if you can call it that.... anyway i had a gt avalanch(sp) with an xt groupset, i loved it.... then i came off and never got on my bike again.... now im wanting to get back into it, looking at buying a new bike, but unsure if i should get a frame and build it up or a complete bike? was looking at gt's the other day but things have changed over the years! i.e. saw an xt 4 pot brake system for the front for £75.... aceness!
what would people recommend then, build your own or bu ya complete bike?
wheres best online to buy stuff?
what frames would people recommend?
brakes?
etc......
not sure how much i want to spend yet.... 500 maybe.... prob going to limit me, but id liek a decent frame first then if i get shite components i can upgrade them at a later date....

i agree, never get disc brakes. id go for hyrdaulic ones, used to cost around £100 like 4 years ago.
just buy a mountain bike mag and look at the prices and reviews on things and ul soon get to know whats what again.

it would be a lot cheaper to buy a whole bike with the frame you want ... then upgrade components etc at a later date if you wanted ...
... you could buy a complete bike for cheaper, and if you wanted strip it down to the frame and rebuild it .. whatever floats your boat really

ye XT was the best when i had it, but its all fucked up now. its a black dbr frame, think its size 16" so it was smaller than the full size but bigger than a trials bike which was perfect for me.
and i was the only one with jud shox, everyone else had much better stuff but i just loved mine lol cos they wer rare at the time, same with the frame, iv never seen another one like mine before

merlin wer good frames, really cheap aswell. i live near leyland bikes which used to have a 4-6 page advert in MBUK and they specialised in merlin i think.
scott i always wanted one of those bikes, but cost a lot of money.

Building your own will cost more because you wont skimp on the parts you don't notice much...
