Looking at building a PC.
I know I want an AMD Athlon 64 chip of some sort.
Which means the motherboard will need to be socket 939
I want 1GB of half decent ram and Id quite like to all that to come to less than £300. If im gunna end up with crap stuff then I will go for 512MB of RAM for the time being and then ill upgrade in the near future.
Any recommendations?
Cheers, James

Look on ebuyer. There will be something on there to fit your budget for sure.
Asus are decnt mid range boards from my experience, decent for over clocking too a little bit.
I always go for crucial ram. Never had a problem with them.

I looked at the bundles on overclockers but thought I might be able to get a better deal elsewhere buying the stuff on its own.
Which make of mobo's are good to go for?
I was thinking Asus?

Its got value RAM though - guess I could stick it on ebay and buy some decent stuff?

Asus SLi-deluxe from overclockers.co.uk. this is a brilliant board and will set you in good stead for dual core 64bit cpus in the future, unless you can afford a AMD X2 4800+ now

If you get the SLI deluxe look out for the dodgy chipset fan this WILL need replacing after 0-3 months. Other than that this is a awesome board and for under a tonne u can't go wrong. if you are going to get a dual core amd get the 4400+ as it has 1mb &1mb cache not 512 & 512 like others. I have this board with a 4400+, it did need a bios update but i highly recommend it!
I bought some Kingstom RAm too 1gig pc3200 400hz DDR. I am looking on putting 2 gig in. Its pretty neat! Depends what you can afford really.
As you ahve a budget of £300 go for the AMD 3200+ venice. REally good chip for an affordable £120.
Total price.
CPU - £120 Amd Venice 64 3200+
Motherboard - £95 Asus SLI - Premium(this comes twith the updated chipset fan that doesn't break)
RAM - £65 - Kingston 1gig pc3200 DDR 400hz
Pretty neat for £300
(All prices from ebuyer)

I wana make sure the mobo is pretty good because its the last thing i want to have to replace in 6 months!

definatly very good.
in a a few months time when the x2 chips become cheaper, you can (and i will) upgrade to a nice X2 Dual Core FX60 or the X2 Dual Core 4800

Cheers for your help - im a bit out of touch with the latest components to be honest. Will that mobo support dual core cpu's?
And it doesnt say premium or deluxe, so will it be the one below those two?
Cheers,
James

its not the premium, but it looks to me the only differen is half the SATA ports (for your SATA hard drives should you ever upgrade - i have done).
It already has 4 SATA conenctors and a couple of IDE conenctors, so go for it

Right this is what im thinking:
the prices dont include VAT and i still havent included a PSU or case which will be about another £120.
The total excludingf the case and PSU but including the VAT is £440 which is a bit more than i wanted to spend.
What do people think? by the way i know the graphics card is shite but that can be upgraded later when i have more £££

dude did u read what i said about the chipset fans on the deluxze mobo's?
It seriously is worth it to go premium as these things are a pain!

not bad.
incredibly shite gfx card tho!
you also wanna update the hard drive to the 250gb 16mb cache, would be slightly quicker.
Ive just bought the 250gb 16mb cache (additional £20 for 100gb + 8mb cache extra) well worth every penny (Western Digital Caviar Special Edition 250GB 2500KS SATA-II 16MB)
