hey people,
this is primarily aimed at designers but feel free to offer your opinion.
i'm a 2nd yr graphic design ba student and need to get a new computer quick-time! my previous computer was a desktop pc (fairly old but did the job), but i've been having loads of problems with it. had to get a new harddrive for it last month. now the mother boards going! it's one thing after another! 
i intended to buy a laptop in the summer but instead of throwing more cash-dollar in to the nailed desktop pc it makes more sense to buy one now.
i'm still not sure whether to get pc or mac though. i know the industry standard is mac but is it that important?
if i were to go for mac, i would get the 14" ibook, but i don't really know about pc's.
any opinions, advice, links to websites, offers/good deals would be mucho appreciated!

From personal use, i find a pc being the better one.
Also if yuou can Dual boot windows and linux as i know there is quite a few packages i have used in the past that will only use linux

If your a designer, use a mac. Its all people use in the industry.
I am using one now at work and their so much quicker/easier to use than a pc, and never crashes.
Im using a dual processor G4 and it blows my P4 2.8 at home out the window.
but if your going to want to play games, ul have to get pc.
Remember that macs now have Intel processors in them so old the old macs will become obsolete, as the new ones will require all new software (photoshop/quark etc)
If your going for something on the cheap, go for PC, but if you can stretch, id definately go for mac

Fair point Dave, but i have crashed a Mac more times than a pc lol
I suppose its what environment your used to at the end of the day. If you feel more comfortable with a Windows / Linux environment go for otherwise go for a mac

Also what graphics are you designing?
Computer games? - PC
CAD - Linux
Im saying cad linux cause Rolls royce only used that so i assume it must be the best OS for it

well i can use both windows and osx. i'm more capable with windows but mac users tell me that once you get used to osx its way better and easier than windows.
it'll be for graphic design and i will be getting the CS2 package. mainly design magazine spreads, posters, booklets, brand identities etc.
not planning on getting any games, maybe just unreal tournament!  !

The PowerMacs are still running the G5 IBM processors, so the current load of software still works. I say Mac.

Then your buying a now obsolete computer though as they will be intel soon.
The intels are also much faster.

- I used to have a pre-pentium DX66 - bet it was faster than that it had 500MB of disk space - in fact - it was a compaq with the monitor sitting over a built in HD / floppy / floppy drive. Thing is - it cost the person that bought it £1500 brand new - that was in 1995.
