Just a quick hello, I'm looking to get an XE powered Corsa and wondered what are the common problems to look for? as in are there any common conversion bodges or issues with the cars in general. I'm looking to get a Corsa "B" with the plan to add diesel badges for the sleeper look. I notice there are plenty for sale in the classifieds section but would like to know what to look out for. Most of them are miles and miles from me, which isn't a problem but I'd hate to break down on the journey home
I'll leave it at that as I'm even boring myself now!
Many thanks
Dave

Hi
Best thing I could reccomend is rebuild it so you know whats new & whats not. Last thing you'll want to do is start taking it back out again to replace gaskets etc
Most people who do this tend to have relatively stress free motoring
Where you from?

check header tanks and under the oil filler for anything untoward (oil/water mix), signs of a porous head, or dying head gasket

if it looks bodged with wires and shit everywhere, leave it alone.
Engines are strong, can easy see 200k on one thats been regularly serviced etc. Some do suffer from a porous cylinder head fault, oil starts mixing with water. Easy to spot, just pop the top off the header tank and check for yellowy white mayonase type stuff. if its there, run away. But most problems lie with electrical sensors etc, Idle control valve, Air flow meter, Throttle position switch, distributor and crank angle sensor are all prone to dieing when getting on for 100k miles. Non of them are particularly expensive 2nd hand, easy to change as well.
Dont buy the first one you see, test drive a few. power should be strong and progressive upto about 6k on a standard engine. Also have a look at tyre wear, what brakes it has etc, front brakes ideally should be 256mm off 2ltr astra/cav/cally or bigger. Gives you an idea of how well its been setup.

Idealy I'd like to go the rebuild or DIY route but I've got far too many projects and unfinished stuff in the garage already! Lookin for one as a daily driver so needs to be pretty reliable.

Looks nice...but about twice my budget!
Am I being unrealistic trying to get a tidy reliable one for under 2 grand?
Cheers
