Depth of field is what is in focus, the blur behind and in front is called bokeh. a large aperture (small f number) or zooming willl give you reduced DOF. eg f4 @ 105 give less DOF than F2.8 @ 70mm. these shots were all taken with a 30mm lense and go up in 1 stop per picture. f1.4, f2.0, f2.8, f4, f5.6, f8.

I'm slowly learning here.....

So to get a shot with depth do not zoom & use a low aperture?

So its better to take each pic a few times with differant amounts of zoom & aperture so that you can choose the best pic afterwards?

I'd say the 3rd pic looks best, but if I had taken the 1st pic only I would've thought it lokked good (if that makes sense?)

The way the camera exposes at different apertures is strange - even though the same amount of light has fallen on the scene, the camera has made the smaller aperture photos appear brighter.
