sure cat c is not cost effective for insurance company to repair, ie would cost more to repair than the current value of car.

iv seen an alfa romeo v6, went to view it, current owner is actually totally oblivious to the fact that is is a cat c (so he says he is) but hpi check says it is a cat c, has been repaired though.

Category A: Total burnout. No value left in the vehicle
Category B: Break only. Value lies in salvage
Category C: Damage to car is more than total value of car
Category D: Repair would cost almost as much as the vehicle is worth. Better to write off than repair. No comebacks for the insurers

I would think cat c would generally just be cosmetic damage then?

Most of the time it is but always get it checked out, cause a car can look great but still have loads of underlying problems.
