I doubt it'll make much difference on a 1.2 8v.

not worried about power, its a 1.2 8v so bot going to get much
just a better sound, so the revs dont have to be sky high to get a note
buying a universal induction kit this weekend to try and improve the note

yeh should be alright then - remove the center section (i.e. replace center pipe) and get a back box and it'll sound a lot louder / deeper.
I wouldn't worry about losing back pressure it won't remove that much restriction.

ok, just hadnt a clue what back pressure was and how much effect it had but it doesnt seem a biggy
would the 1.2 8v be bad for emissions without a cat?

why you replacing the cat if your not bothered about performance? most straight through center pipes are cat back.
removing the cat will give a rasp noise. You want a nice deep burble noise, which the 1.2 8v makes when you remove the silencer.
little article about back pressure

needing a better exahust note, so was going to think about getting a straight through exahust and taking the cat out

just get the straight through exhaust (center pipe cat back) and leave the cat in. Only real reason people remove cats is to gain power.
that is unless your going for a rally style sound - raspy as fuck like a fart noise.

maybe no if itl sound rough, ever heard a corsa sport with a straight through exahust? love that noise and want something like that but not sure if il get it with a 1.2 8v
just have to see if the local exhaust/steel place can work their magic

all you need to improve the sound - since you've already got a backbox, is a center pipe for about £60.
This goes inbetween your cat and backbox and replaces the silencer that is currently there.

Tuv is some europe modding law, may just be germany? To have a part on their car by law it must be Tuv approved - not relevant over here. With the center pipe, because you'll have a cat you'll pass MOT still.

I have a de-cat AND a staright thru centre section (no silencers what so ever) on my x16xe, made it go abit better top end, but lost abit of low-down torque.
