A few months ago my destop pc stopped working. I was told it wasnt worth fixing. Ive been given a pc by a friend but it only had a 7Gb HD.

So my question, Would I be able to put my 80Gb HD from my old desktop pc in to the one I was given (It has all my pics ect on it). Connections all look the same ect.

yeah you should be able to - would you be replacing the 7GB or putting your old one in to run alongside it?

If you were running them together you would need to set the jumpers accordingly but as you're replacing the 7gb you just need to copy the jumper settings onto the other hard drive

On the back where all the cables plug in there is a set of pins (2 pins high, 4 pins wide) - you need to make sure that the hard drive going in has the same settingsa as the hard drive coming out. The settings are made by a smal plastic collar type thing that hooks over two pins at a time.

Simply compare them and make sure they look the same. This setting tells the drive whether it is to act as the master or the slave

I wouldn't just compare them and check they look the same.
Different drives use different settings.
Check that what the position refers to on each drive is the same.

Fair point mate but everytime I have put a hrad drive in they have always used the same pins for the same settings - Same with CD/DVD ROM drives so i just assumed that they all use the same positions

if your reaplacing it, and only using one drive per ide, you can stick jumpers on anything you want, you dont have to repalce it..
