Obviously the head would be off, but do you need to remove the block in order to replace the piston rings of an engine?

Do most people do this or take the block out to do this task?

if you keep the block in you aint gotta sod about with lining up the input shaft of the gearbox but i personally would remove the whole engine and freshen up the lot, you can clean and paint the block then too

Ahh OK, well basically I am looking to get the piston rings replaced and new valve stem oil seals, head gasket, etc. just wondered what a mechanic dude would do, as my X14XE drinks oil and is about as powerful as a X12SZ...

You do it with the engine in. No problem really. Just take it all apart and put it back together. Just takes a lot of time!
