The announcement was made after Vauxhall management and officials from its parent company General Motors met with union leaders at the factory.
Chancellor Gordon Brown was also present at the plant for the decision.
Vauxhall said it was switching from three to two shifts at the factory which makes its Astra model.
The company said the move reflected the "ongoing pressure" in the car industry to increase productivity and reduce costs.
GM, the biggest US car company, is also cutting 30,000 jobs in the US on the back of falling sales and profits.

It's not good for car manufacturer's at all....and that britain's industry more/less finished too.
The thing though........with ppl every week somewhere being paid off, just how the hell do companie's expect to still make money and (far to greedy) profit's, the bubble's gona burst.

but how do you know that any other country that you move to is going to be any better?
I wouldn't have a clue if the way that France, Spain or anywhere else in the world is run is any better than this country?

Nuclear power is one of the cleanest energy sources available though Jade; agreed the risk of it is huge but with todays technology .etc it's very rare that something like chernobyl will happen again... but yes i appreciate the risk.

Thing is though if you went to certain parts of spain or france or Italy you could probably get a nice cushy wee job in a vinyard squashing grapes, it will be cheap living & you wont want for much...nice easy lifestyle. Over here everythings going at 100mph & you have to go with it to survive. I would swap lifes luxuries for the quiet life in a second!!

Come to think of it I'd quite happily do a nice little job like that in Spain or Southern France
Just too attached to family and friends to be able to ever do something like that even if it were only for 6 months for the experience of living in another country.
Bit off topic but hey

It's clean because it can be dealt with accordingly:
"Once the fission process has slowed, the fuel rods are replaced. The spent fuel rods contain highly radioactive fission products and must be stored safely. These used fuel rods are considered high level nuclear waste. Currently all high level nuclear waste is stored in large pools of water at the power plants where it was generated. Seven to ten feet of water is enough to stop all radioactivity (Keeny, 1998). Since the late 1950's, high level nuclear waste has been stored in this form, and there has never been any release of radioactivity. There is actually a relatively small amount of high level nuclear waste. All of the waste ever produced in the history of commercial nuclear power production in the United States would cover the area of a football field four yards high (NEI: High-level waste, 1998). "
