We have 2 PC's running off a 3Comm router. I've recently installed a non licenced copy of XP Pro on one, this brings up the counterfeit copy of Windows message. My dad has just switched on his PC, which is running a licenced XP Home, and has just got the same message.
Is this because we are on a network so it is giving the same message for both machines?

If somebody else has used the same key as the legit one they got from a keygen ur legit copy could show up as counterfeit.
It could be attached to IP address but i'm not 100% sure what parameters are involved in checking its legit.

It's hardly the first legit computer that's been brought up as counterfeit when it isn't. There's countless tales of customers who it's happened to. If you contact the relevant support at MS (it's the same as the support for activation) then they'll sort it.
